Jawata Afnan received her B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2013. She worked as a research assistant at the University of Manitoba PET (Positron emission tomography) Imaging Lab (2017-2019) under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Goertzen and obtained her M.Sc. degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of Manitoba. Since 2019, she has been a Ph.D. student in the Integrated Program in Neuroscience (IPN) at McGill, supervised by Dr. Christophe Grova and Dr. Jean Gotman.
Research Project
Surgery is considered for some epileptic patients who are medically refractory, targeting the focal brain region capable of generating epileptic seizures. An invasive procedure called intracerebral EEG (iEEG) is performed to accurately localize the epileptic regions before surgical resection. Jawata’s project aims to characterize the ability of non-invasive magnetoencephalography (MEG) to recover intracerebral brain activity and validate with iEEG data using simultaneous MEG-iEEG recordings from patients with epilepsy.
