The Canadian Open Neuroscience Platform (CONP), in collaboration with the Tanenbaum Open Science Institute (TOSI), hosted a webinar entitled “Towards Open Science: Research Ethics Best Practices” on March 31, 2022. It presented a brief overview of the most relevant factors for maintaining research participant autonomy while maximizing the collective benefit resulting from the practice of open neuroscience, as well as guidance concerning how to prepare a research proposal for Research Ethics Board approval. Topics included privacy safeguards and risk mitigation, de-identification, regulatory issues, and other requirements for ethically sound data-sharing.
The hour-long webinar was divided into a 30-minute presentation, followed by a Q & A and discussion period. The intended audience is researchers at all career stages interested in open data-sharing (especially in neuroscience), ethics professionals and REB members, science communicators, etc.
Our speaker was Alexander Bernier, who is a Canadian lawyer and Academic Associate at McGill University’s Centre of Genomics and Policy. In this role, Alexander helps large-scale biomedical research projects to adopt technological designs and organizational practices that are compliant with ethics and the law. Alexander is a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, where he performs research on the intersection of law, open science, and platforms for data-driven health research, and also serves as the CONP’s Ethics Officer.
