Dataset spotlight: the Calgary Preschool MRI Dataset

An updated and expanded version of the Calgary Preschool MRI Dataset is available through the CONP Portal. Its data come from a large longitudinal study of early brain development by Catherine Lebel’s Developmental Neuroimaging Lab at the University of Calgary, and it covers an age range that is rarely studied.

What it holds. 143 children aged 2 to 13 were scanned on the same 3T GE MR750w system and invited back every year between 2013 and 2023, for 1 to 28 sessions each (679 sessions in all). The MRI data include T1- and T2-weighted anatomical images, diffusion imaging (b = 750 and b = 2000), resting-state fMRI, inhomogeneous magnetization transfer (ihMT) and arterial spin labelling (ASL). The children also completed regular cognitive assessments; those data are available from the lab upon request.

Open and citable. The 334 GB of images (compressed NIfTI) are openly licensed under CC BY 4.0 and hosted on the Open Science Framework (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/AXZ5R). The dataset is described in Reynolds et al. (2020), “Calgary Preschool magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) dataset”, Data in Brief. On the Portal it can be downloaded with DataLad, like the Portal’s other datasets. The study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
